Ma: designing with the space you leave empty

In Japanese, 間 (ma) is the interval: the pause between notes, the gap between stepping stones. It's not empty so much as charged. The space is doing work.

We treat layout the same way. A section that leaves its first four columns deliberately blank isn't wasting room; it's giving the eye somewhere to rest and the content somewhere to land. Negative space is the loudest thing on a calm page.

It's tempting to fill every pixel: more features, more copy. Restraint is harder. But the calm you feel using good software is mostly the things we chose to leave out.
